Top legal official clears way for bottle ban

CONCORD, MA — We need a “pet” name for toxic, wasteful, single-use plastic water bottles. Any ideas?

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has advised the Town of Concord, MA, that its water bottle bylaw banning the sale of single-use plastic bottles could withstand legal challenge.

The ban would go into effect January 1.

Coakley cited a U.S. Supreme Court ruling which upheld a Minnesota law banning the sale of milk in non-returnable, non-refillable plastic containers.

The environmental problems — beginning with extraction of raw materials through manufacturing, use and disposal — caused by non-reusable plastic bottle use have been cited over many years.

Ban the Bottle, an organization challenging the toxic, wasteful, and conscienceless merchandising of single-use plastic bottles, provides actionable information.

NBC News reported that Concord’s ban was due largely through the three-year efforts of an 84-year-old citizen.
