NORTHERN ISRAEL — A parks official found a single specimen of an extremely rare frog unseen since 1955 — good news that nonetheless highlights the elimination of species through man’s assault on nature’s wetlands.

Omri Gal of Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority told journalist Erez Erlichman he spotted a female Hula Painted Frog, Discoglossus Nigriventer, in northern Israel’s Hula Valley.

Smile. Frogger.
